Coast Medic Supports RNLI During Castle to Castle Swim 2024

The annual Castle to Castle Swim between Pendennis Castle in Falmouth and St Mawes Castle is one of Cornwall’s most iconic open water events. Drawing hundreds of swimmers to the historic waters of the Carrick Roads, it’s not just a test of endurance—it’s also a major fundraising event for the RNLI. For this year’s swim, Coast Medic was proud to support the RNLI by providing professional medical cover both ashore and afloat, helping ensure the safety of all participants.

A Coordinated Medical Response Across Both Shores

To deliver full coverage of the swim route, Coast Medic deployed an emergency ambulance crew stationed at Pendennis Point in Falmouth and a Paramedic Response Vehicle positioned on the St Mawes side. This dual-shore presence ensured that, no matter which side of the water a swimmer required assistance, a professional medical team was ready to respond quickly and effectively.

Working in close partnership with the RNLI lifeboat teams, our medics provided standby support throughout the swim. The RNLI crews patrolled the waters, while our land-based teams handled shoreside care and were prepared to manage any more serious incidents should they arise.

Why Medical Cover Matters at Open Water Events

Open water swimming poses a range of unique medical risks—from cold water shock and hypothermia to fatigue, jellyfish stings, and other sudden health issues. Having dedicated medical teams in place at events like the Castle to Castle Swim is essential for:

  • Rapid response in the event of a medical emergency
  • Preventative care, including monitoring for early signs of distress or exhaustion
  • Reassurance for participants, organisers, and supporters that help is close by if needed
“Supporting this swim was a privilege—not just for the medical challenge it presents, but for the cause it supports,” said Laura Hesketh, Event Coordinator at Coast Medic. “By working hand in hand with the RNLI, we were able to keep everyone safe while allowing them to focus on the challenge and enjoy the day.”

A Successful Day for Safety and Fundraising

The 2024 Castle to Castle Swim was a fantastic success, with swimmers crossing the channel in good conditions, cheered on by crowds and supported by an expert network of volunteers and professionals. Most importantly, the event helped raise vital funds to support Falmouth Lifeboat Station, ensuring the RNLI can continue their lifesaving work along Cornwall’s coastline.

Coast Medic is proud to have played a part in such a meaningful event—and we look forward to continuing to support our coastal communities with professional, responsive medical care.
