The World Gig Championships is logistically challenging, but we absolutely love being their medical provider.

Coast Medic is proud to confirm that we will once again be the official medical provider for the World Pilot Gig Championships, marking our fourth consecutive year supporting one of the most iconic events in the rowing calendar.

Held annually on the beautiful Isles of Scilly, the championships attract thousands of competitors and spectators from across the UK and beyond. With hundreds of crews racing traditional Cornish pilot gigs over the course of the weekend, it is widely regarded as the largest gig rowing event in the world and the highlight of the gig rowing season.

A Unique Event in a Unique Location

Providing medical cover for the World Gig Championships is unlike supporting most mainland sporting events. The Isles of Scilly offer a spectacular backdrop, but the remote island location also brings significant logistical challenges.

Transporting medical teams, equipment, and clinical resources to the islands requires careful planning, coordination, and an understanding of how healthcare operates within a small island community. Medical incidents must be managed efficiently while recognising that the islands have limited healthcare infrastructure compared with mainland cities.

For Coast Medic, this challenge is part of what makes the event so rewarding. The championships are a celebration of Cornish maritime heritage, and we are proud to play a role in ensuring that competitors and visitors can enjoy the event safely.

Experienced Paramedics with Local Knowledge

A key part of Coast Medic’s approach is the use of paramedics who have extensive experience working on the Isles of Scilly, many of whom regularly provide frontline services on the islands as part of NHS operations.

This local knowledge is invaluable. Understanding the geography of the islands, transport routes, landing points, and the capabilities of local healthcare facilities allows our teams to make informed clinical decisions quickly and effectively.

By working with clinicians who already understand the unique environment of the islands, Coast Medic can deliver a level of care that is both efficient and appropriate for the setting.

Supporting the Event Without Impacting Local Healthcare

One of our key priorities when supporting large events in remote locations is ensuring that the event’s medical provision does not place unnecessary pressure on local healthcare services.

The Isles of Scilly have dedicated healthcare teams who provide essential services for residents and visitors year-round. Coast Medic works carefully to ensure that the World Gig Championships are supported with sufficient independent medical capability, allowing the event to be managed safely without drawing heavily on island healthcare resources.

By providing experienced clinicians, appropriate equipment, and well-planned medical infrastructure, we help ensure that both the event and the island community remain well supported throughout the weekend.

Proud to Support the Gig Rowing Community

The World Pilot Gig Championships represent the pinnacle of gig rowing and an important part of Cornwall’s maritime culture. Every year the event brings together crews, supporters, and volunteers in an atmosphere that is both competitive and deeply rooted in tradition.

For Coast Medic, returning for a fourth year as the official medical provider is something we are extremely proud of. Supporting such a unique event, in such a special location, is always a highlight of our calendar.

We look forward to once again working alongside organisers, crews, and the local community to help ensure that the World Gig Championships continue to be a safe, successful, and unforgettable event for everyone involved.

What is the Purple Guide? The The Purple Guide to Health, Safety and Welfare at events is the UK’s recognised standard for planning safe events. It provides comprehensive guidance on all aspects of event delivery, including crowd safety, infrastructure and medical provision. For event organisers, the Purple Guide is not optional reading; it is the benchmark used by: Local Authorities Safety Advisory Groups (SAGs) Emergency Services Licensing bodies Failure to follow its principles can expose organisers to legal liability, particularly if an incident occurs and medical provision is found to be inadequate.

Delivering a successful event involves more than entertainment, logistics and crowd management. Event organisers have a legal duty of care to ensure that everyone attending the event is protected from foreseeable harm and that appropriate medical support is available if something goes wrong. Too often, event organisers assume that booking a “first aid provider” satisfies this requirement. In reality, there is a significant difference between basic first aid provision and regulated medical services. Understanding this difference is essential not only for public safety but also for protecting organisers from serious legal and reputational consequences. This article aims to explain the difference to help event organisers consider what's right for their event.
