Supporting the Gig Community

Coast Medic Ambulance was pleased to provide medical cover for the recent Three Rivers Gig Racing event, supporting rowers, organisers, and spectators throughout the day. Set against a challenging and energetic course, the event brought together crews of all abilities, showcasing both competitive spirit and strong community values.

For this event, we deployed a clinical crew alongside a fully equipped ambulance, ensuring that in the event of an emergency, immediate assessment, treatment, and, where required, conveyance to hospital could be delivered without delay. Our team remained on standby throughout, working closely with event organisers to maintain a safe environment while allowing the racing to continue uninterrupted.

Rowing events such as gig racing present a unique risk profile. The combination of intense physical exertion, environmental exposure, and variable water conditions can increase the likelihood of medical incidents. Cardiac arrests, in particular, remain a key concern in endurance-based sports, where early recognition and rapid intervention are critical to achieving positive outcomes. In addition, crews may be at risk of injuries, cold exposure, or medical episodes triggered by exertion.

Having an appropriately equipped and clinically trained medical team on site ensures that any incident can be managed promptly and effectively. This not only safeguards participants but also provides reassurance to organisers that they are meeting their duty of care and operating in line with best practice guidance.

It was a privilege to support the crews as they took to the water, and we are grateful for the warm welcome from everyone involved. Events like these highlight the importance of preparation, teamwork, and community spirit—values that we are proud to be part of.

We are always happy to support other gig rowing events and are pleased to offer a discount to Cornwall Gig Association clubs.

Delivering a successful event involves more than entertainment, logistics and crowd management. Event organisers have a legal duty of care to ensure that everyone attending the event is protected from foreseeable harm and that appropriate medical support is available if something goes wrong. Too often, event organisers assume that booking a “first aid provider” satisfies this requirement. In reality, there is a significant difference between basic first aid provision and regulated medical services. Understanding this difference is essential not only for public safety but also for protecting organisers from serious legal and reputational consequences. This article aims to explain the difference to help event organisers consider what's right for their event.
